Walking Football is a completely different sport to “Association Football” primarily through the elimination of running and physical contact.
It requires skills based on passing the ball, movement and anticipation, rather than out-pacing or out-muscling individual players.
The game allows people of differing ages, gender, abilities and experiences to participate TOGETHER. The Walking Football Association’s (WFA) “Laws of the Game (LOTG)” have been designed to meet the values and ethos of this unique sport.
Walking Football was first introduced into Guernsey, as taster sessions, by the Guernsey Football Association (GFA) in association with King George V Playing Fields (KGV) in 2014. These sessions were well attended and great interest was shown by the participants. This continued for approximately 18 months purely as a social group and was well attended.
Guernsey Walking Football Club (GWFC) was formed in early 2017, with an Acting President, Acting Secretary and Acting Treasurer. A Club Constitution was written and adopted by the club and accepted by the Guernsey Sports Commission in early 2017. At the same time, a link was set up with “The Walking Football Association” (WFA) and more recently with the International organisation the FIWFA who have members all over the UK as well as on the continent and Worldwide. The GWFC, in 2017, had 22 members both male and female and have 12/14 regular attendees at the social sessions held on Sunday mornings.
Walking Football in Guernsey was officially introduced to the public during “Healthy Heart Weekend” held at Beau Sejour in early 2016 and again in 2017, where the public were invited to participate in a session alongside players from the club.
During the next 2 years many events were organised, supporting the Bobby Moore Foundation being one of the first for the club. Coaching sessions were organised during 2018 at Beau Sejour and the Styx Community centre to help new players take up the activity.
KGV had been our ’Home’ for GWFC where we held our first Festival, trips to Jersey, the first ever Internationals with England Men and Women teams and more recently with the Isle of Man. 2020/21 will see more opportunities for the newly formed Guernsey Walking Football LBG Charity.
