Successful Day at Eastleigh Walking Football Tournament

The Guernsey Walking Football Club enjoyed a successful day at Eastleigh Walking Football Tournament

On Saturday 11th July, Guernsey Walking Football Club (GWFC) travelled to Eastleigh to take part in an enjoyable and highly competitive walking football tournament at Places Leisure Centre.

Kindly sponsored by Healthspan, the event brought together teams from Eastleigh, Portsmouth, Botley, Winchester and Guernsey, with GWFC represented in both the Over-50s and Over-65s age groups.

The tournament began with a poignant minute's silence in memory of founder member Paul Wheatley, whose dedication to the sport helped forge the strong friendship between Guernsey and Eastleigh Walking Football Clubs.

Despite the blistering temperatures, both Guernsey teams produced determined and spirited performances against quality opposition. The regular hydration breaks were certainly welcome, but they did little to dampen the enthusiasm, teamwork and sportsmanship on display throughout the afternoon.

The tournament concluded with the Sarnia trophy presentation (sponsored by Sunnybank Care Homes), with Winchester lifting the Over-50s trophy and Eastleigh claiming the Over-65s crown. GWFC finished third in the Over-50s competition and fourth in the Over-65s, with both squads showcasing the club's team spirit.

GWFC extends its sincere thanks to Eastleigh Walking Football Club for their warm hospitality and excellent organisation, and to Healthspan for their generous sponsorship, which helped make another memorable day of walking football possible. It is hoped that this can become an annual event with interest from other teams visiting Guernsey for return matches.
