Guernsey 1 - 1 - England
It was a wonderful day for the Guernsey Walking Football Club as international football came back to the island with our over-70 age group playing England over-75s.
In a tight and highly competitive match, Guernsey took the lead in the first period with a swift counterattack following Keith Corbin’s great interception and through ball for John Casey, who expertly slid the ball past the advancing goalkeeper and into the far corner of the England goal.
England equalised towards the end of the first period with a volley from close range following a rebound. In the remaining two periods both teams created opportunities to win the match from open play but some great defending particularly from man of the match Bryan Lowe and excellent saves from both goalkeepers kept the score at 1-1.
In the final 10 minutes, Guernsey were awarded a penalty (which also saw an England player sent off for dissent). Paul Rogers stepped up and took the penalty and would have won the game for Guernsey if it weren’t for a fantastic low diving save from the England goalkeeper.
With the man advantage in the final minutes, Guernsey pushed hard for a winner but were unable to find the breakthrough and the game ended in an deserved and hard earned 1-1 draw.
Well done to the entire Guernsey squad…..you all did yourselves and your island very proud! 🇬🇬⚽️🙌
